Compositionality , Flexibility , and Context - Dependence

چکیده
The compositionality idea is the idea that semantic interpretation proceeds in two steps. Simple expressions are interpreted by means of lexical rules, which assign meanings to them directly. Complex expressions are interpreted by means of compositional rules, which assign meanings to them indirectly, as a function of the meanings of their parts. For any simple expression , the associated lexical rule says that the interpretation of is a certain entity m :

Contextualism and Compositionality
There are two ways of approaching this issue. One is to focus on the question of compatibility: Assuming context-sensitivity is pervasive, what does that mean for compositionality? The other is to focus on the issue of whether contextualism is well supported: Assuming that contextualism is incompatible with compositionality, are the arguments for it strong enough to pose a real threat to compos...

متن کاملCompositionality: its historic context
The aim of this chapter is to investigate the line from the 19th century, through Frege’s works, to the appearance of the principle of compositionality in modern sciences. It is shown that contextuality and compositionality were discussed at the beginnings of the 19th century, but that contextuality was favoured. Also for Frege contextuality was the basic principle and he always obeyed it. Alth...
متن کاملGeometry of Compositionality
This paper proposes a simple test for compositionality (i.e., literal usage) of a word or phrase in a context-specific way. The test is computationally simple, relying on no external resources and only uses a set of trained word vectors. Experiments show that the proposed method is competitive with state of the art and displays high accuracy in context-specific compositionality detection of a v...
متن کاملCompositionality, context, and cognition: comment on "Embodied language, best fit analysis, and formal compositionality" by J. Feldman.
Feldman’s project [1] has the ambitious goal of giving a compositional account of the “full range of meanings” in human language, one which meets the high standards of formalization found in formal semantics but is built on a theory of “embodied cognition”, takes into account the neurobiological substrate of language, and makes use of representations of world knowledge and discourse and situati...
